Chromebook Help Desk: Slow Performance

Troubleshooting tips and online support.

Why is my Chromebook so slow?  Here are a few factors which may affect the speed of your Chromebook and what you can do to improve its performance.

Close your tabs!

Too many open tabs can slow down the speed of your browser. Five or fewer is best.

Update your browser!

Since Google Chrome is always updating and changing, there often will be times that Chrome OS (the operating system for Chromebooks) will need to be updated. Follow the steps of the Basic Tips for Top Performance tab to ensure the OS is always up to date.

To update Google Chrome:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click on the three dots.
  3. Click Help. About Google Chrome.
  4. Click Update Google Chrome. ***Important: If you can't find this button, you're on the latest version***.
  5. Click Relaunch.

Clean your Cache!

Sometimes data on the clipboard or in the cache just gets to be to much and the Chromebook or device would benefit from clearing the cache.

In Chrome

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click on the three dots, then click on More Tools.
  3. Click More tools. Clear Browsing Data.
  4. At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select  All Time.
  5. Next to "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," check the boxes.
  6. Click Clear data.
